Pew: Daily Twitter Usage Has Quadrupled Since 2010

The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project has

released new survey based findings about Twitter usage in the US. Overall 15 percent of online adults say they use Twitter, with 8 percent doing so daily. That compares with 13 percent who reported being Twitter users last year.

Yet the number of daily Twitter users has doubled since May 2011 and quadrupled since Pew began doing surveys about Twitter in 2010. Pew attributes this increase in daily usage in part to the rise of smartphones.

According to 2011 data Twitter has nearly 500 million registered global users with 140 million of them active daily, generating more than 340 million posts.

The US has the most Twitter users (nearly 110 million) but several other countries are more active than the US: Netherlands, Japan and Spain.
