A recent
report from Pew Research Center revealed high Twitter usage among young African Americans, with 40 percent of 18 – 29 year old African American internet users on Twitter compared to 28 percent of whites in the same age group.
According to Pew, general adoption of social media sites is nearly equal for both African American internet users (73%) and white internet users (72%), but African Americans have higher rates of Twitter usage compared to whites. Pew found that 22 percent of all African American internet users are on Twitter, while only 16 percent of all white Internet users.
The gap between African Americans and whites on Twitter doubles when measuring Twitter use among 18 to 29 year olds. For everyone 30 years and older, Twitter usage among the two groups levels out to relatively the same percentage of users.
Pew’s research for its African Americans and Technology Use report is based on a telephone survey of 6,010 American adults, and was conducted July 18 through September 30 of last year. It is worth noting that of the total number of participants, Pew says only 664 respondents identified themselves as black or African American.
