Number Of Mobile Retail Websites Using Responsive Design More Than Doubles Since 2014

More online retailers are turning to responsive design websites to serve their mobile customers.

According to mobile marketing firm Pure Oxygen Labs, 20 percent of Internet Retailer’s top 500 mobile retailers have adopted responsive design websites since last year, a sizable increase from the 9 percent using responsive design in 2014.

After analyzing all 500 mobile retail websites, Pure Oxygen found mobile retailers using responsive design now outnumber those using dynamic serving to deliver a mobile website. The majority of the retailers still have a dedicated mobile site, although this number is dropping.

In 2014, 15 percent of the Internet Retailer top 500 mobile retail websites used dynamic serving. That number has increased to 18 percent, while 54 percent of the sites have kept a dedicated mobile site, down from 59 percent in 2014.

Of the 500 websites Pure Oxygen evaluated, 25 still have no mobile site, instead serving up a website built for desktop users on mobile devices. While this means 5 percent of the top 500 online retailers are not utilizing some form of mobile design, it is a significant drop since last year, when 14 percent failed to deliver a mobile experience.

“Google’s recent algorithm change (Mobilegeddon) no doubt added a level of urgency to mDot site migrations, as retailers took a fresh look at their mobile strategy,” claims Pure Oxygen.
