Global survey data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows Android sales share gains nearly across the board. This includes China, the major European markets and the US.
In China, the WPP-owned research arm said that Android boosted its share three points, rising from 73 percent to 76.4 percent. In the major European markets, the gains were nearly seven points and in the US, just over three points.
Kantar’s methodology and market share data are different from comScore’s, which shows Android with an approximately 53-percent market share and iOS with roughly 44 percent in the US. Kanter shows a much greater Android share, though these are new device sales.
Kantar also explains that 69 percent of Android buyers spend less $350 on their devices. These non-premium buyers are the ones the new iPhone SE is targeting. However, Localytics released data on first weekend sales for the SE showing only limited demand in the US.
Localytics reported the SE saw lower adoption than any previous iPhone in recent history on its opening weekend. But the phone is also aimed at overseas markets where buyers are more resistant to premium devices.
