Zeppelin Beats Space Needle For Biggest Twitter Hashtag Title

Sometimes, it is the size of your hashtag that matters.

In Seattle this week, the Space Needle launched a contest that will let one person place his/her own design atop the iconic structure for six months. And one of the ways the Needle is promoting the contest is with a Twitter campaign around the #topthis hashtag — which has also been painted on top of the Space Needle.

The hashtag and campaign has already gotten pretty heavy press coverage in Seattle, with news helicopters showing how it looks from the sky above. (Most inbound Seattle aircraft also pass over the Space Needle making it visible to thousands every day.)

It’s huge, but nowhere near the biggest hashtag that we know of.

That title belongs to the folks at Airship Ventures, a Bay Area-based company that offers passenger tours aboard a zeppelin named Eureka that’s longer than standard 747s … and has plenty of space for a big hashtag.

So, when the company launched a new social media campaign last month, it splashed a Twitter hashtag on the side of Eureka in huge lettering — #ZeppMe — and issued a news release (PDF) billing it as the world’s largest Twitter hashtag.

Is it really bigger than the Space Needle’s hashtag?

Yep.

Airship Ventures says its #ZeppMe hashtag measures 22 feet high and 128 feet long.

The Space Needle? A spokesperson tells us that their #topthis hashtag is only 10 feet tall.

Already topped. Sorry, Space Needle.
