Reports on Twitter — and my own first-hand experience — show that Google’s Gmail has gone down, a rare occurrence.
Using one of the many site status checking services out there, Down For Everyone Or Just Me, also shows Gmail as down:
Google’s “App Status Dashboard” isn’t showing the error, but it’s happening — and happening also, apparently, for those with Gmail through Google Apps accounts.
It also appears that Google’s social network, Google+, is suffering severe problems.
We’ve emailed Google for comment — oh wait, we can’t, because most of us and Google also use Gmail. But we will.
Meanwhile, Yahoo has decided it’s a good time to poke fun at Google, sharing the news on Twitter:
Gmail is temporarily unavailable pic.twitter.com/KLNxcQ9zUP — Yahoo (@Yahoo) January 24, 2014
Kind of risky for Yahoo to poke fun at Gmail, given that its CEO Marissa Mayer had to apologize recently for Yahoo Mail woes that went on for days, for a small percentage of its users.

Meanwhile, the Gmail account on Twitter has said nothing — it last tweeted, at the time of this writing, on January 22.
Postscript 2:25pm ET: And service is now being restored for Gmail, it appears. Google+ is still sluggish.
Postscript 2:45pm ET: Gmail seems to be up-and-down now.
Postscript 3: Google’s posted an apology for the outages, saying they hit about 10 percent of users for about 30 minutes, and that it “missed the mark” for the reliability it aims for.
