Yahoo Takes Another Step Toward Growing Its Mobile Audience With New iOS App

Yahoo

introduced its new iOS app today, noting that the technology used to build the app was possible because of their recent acquisition of Summly. “The new Yahoo mobile app is also smarter, using Summly’s natural-language algorithms and machine learning to deliver quick story summaries,” said Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer in a post on Yahoo’s corporate blog.

Yahoo gained a number of headlines when it acquired Summly less than a month ago for approximately $30 million. Most of the attention was garnered because the startup was founded by a 17 year old who based his technology on a licensing arrangement with SRI , the organization responsible for Apple’s SIRI.

The new iOS app makes it possible for iPhone and iPad users to search Yahoo for various content with the inclusion of Summly story summaries. Yahoo notes that their new app brings more personalization to the search experience by saving the choices a user makes across all screens when they are logged into their Yahoo account, continuously serving up better results with each new search performed.

Other key features of the new app include the ability to select preferred topics so users receive more of the content they want to see in an endless stream of visual stories, along with improved video and image search experiences, and the option to email and share stories via Facebook and Twitter. The app is currently available only in the U.S. from the iTunes app store.
