Twitter Prompting Users To Advertise On Twitter

Twitter is now prompting ordinary Twitter users to advertise on Twitter.

About ten minutes ago, I went to Twitter.com and I was greeted at the top of my timeline with a message from Twitter to try out their advertising options.

The message read, “Advertise on Twitter,” followed by “grow your followers and help them spread the word about you.” It then had a blue “Start now” button.

Here is a screen shot of the message:

Clicking on “Start now” would take you to ads.twitter.com.

I am not sure if Twitter is targeting these at accounts that have over a certain number of followers or just randomly testing this.

For more on Twitter ads, see our Twitter advertising section.

Postscript by Matt McGee: Twitter tells us that this is one example of how it’s “testing various ways to roll out this offering and reach potentially interested advertisers.” The advertising invitation is not showing to all users, and has been in testing for a couple of weeks (as reader Clark Wimberley also mentions in his comment below). Twitter declined to explain how it selects which users will see this invitation.
