Twitter: Life, Death & Soccer Get Most Tweets Per Second In 2011

Today Twitter announced the Top Tweets per Second in 2011, part of its ongoing Year In Review.  Back in October we complied a list at Search Engine Land, which is strikingly still similar.

The top Twitter events displayed in “tweets per second” (or TPS)  for 2011 were:

  1. 8,868 TPS: MTV Video Awards (Beyonce announces pregnancy) – August 28th

  2. 7,671 TPS:  Troy Davis execution – September 20th

  3. 7,196 TPS:  End of FIFA Women’s World Cup – July 17th

  4. 7,166 TPS:  Brazil elimination from the Copa America – July 17th

  5. 7,064 TPS:  Steve Jobs’s resignation from Apple – August 25th

  6. 6,939 TPS:  New Years – Jan 1st

  7. 6,436 TPS:  BET Awards – June 27th

  8. 6,303 TPS:  UEFA Champions League – May 28th

  9. 6,049 TPS:  Steve Jobs death – October 6th

  10. 5,531 TPS:  NBA Finals – June 14th

For those that enjoy comparing the popularity of sports around the world, here are the major sports milestones from 2011:

  1. 7,196 TPS:  End of FIFA Women’s World Cup – July 17th

  2. 7,166 TPS:  Brazil elimination from the Copa America – July 17th

  3. 6,303 TPS:  UEFA Champions League – May 28th

  4. 5,531 TPS:  NBA Finals – June 14th

  5. 4,064 TPS: Superbowl – February 6th

Sorry NHL and MLB, you were the only main American professional sports organizations that didn’t make the cut.

Out of all the results on this list I was surprised that the death Muammar Gaddafi didn’t make this list.  Truly a news-worthy world event, the death of this leader couldn’t top Beyonce’s baby announcement … or even make a blip on its radar.
