Tumblr Traffic Has Doubled In Last Year, Search Visits Up 200 Percent [comScore]

Tumblr has gained a lot of new users and readers over the past year, and it also has a big fan in Google. (And possibly Bing, for that matter.)

According to comScore, Tumblr saw a 100.5 percent rise in unique visitors between July 2011 and July 2012, reaching 26.9 million uniques in July. Those are desktop visits, and smartphone traffic is also up. ComScore says Tumblr had 6.7 million smartphone visitors in July, a 51 percent gain over only five months.

And it’s not just the social element driving those gains. According to comScore, search traffic to Tumblr has skyrocketed over the past year to 24 million search visits in July — a 200 percent gain year-over-year.

ComScore points out that Tumblr blogs are ranking very highly for some celebrities and brands. Beyoncé’s Tumblr blog is on page two on Google searches for her name, and the same goes for actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt — who also has a number of fan Tumblr blogs showing on page two. There’s a fan Tumblr blog ranking on page one for actress Zooey Deschanel’s name.

On the brand side, I see the official J Crew Tumblr on page one of Google when searching for its name. Bergdorf Goodman’s official Tumblr blog is on page one of Bing. And The Economist’s official Tumblr blog ranks above its Facebook page on Google’s first page when searching for its name.

Tumblr debuted in comScore’s Top 50 web properties earlier this year and has continued to climb the list since.
