The New Yahoo News, Now With More Homepage

Earlier today Yahoo

announced a newly redesigned Yahoo News site. Graphics are larger and there’s more white space at the article level. It may feel too spartan for some and yet too cluttered for others. Design is hard.

Regardless, it’s more consistent with the look of the new Yahoo homepage. And like the homepage it’s intended to become more personalized over time — through a mix of explicit and implicit actions and inferences.

According to the Yahoo tumblr post:

The first thing that you’ll notice about the new Yahoo! News is that it was designed around your interests and preferences. We made the news stream customizable so you can tell us what content you’d like to see more of. Yahoo! News will get smarter over time – the more you use it when signed in with your Yahoo! ID, the more it learns about your preferences, creating a personal news hub just for you. And the new News is super fast, articles now load faster than before.

News has also been redesigned for the mobile web on iOS devices and soon for Android. Indeed, Yahoo is putting consistent effort into improving its mobile sites and their performance.

Perhaps as a result of this Yahoo is seeing an improvement in mobile search usage as well. According to StatCounter, Yahoo’s mobile search share in the US has jumped almost 7 points over the past year. It’s hard to explain other than as a by-product of all the usability improvements in company’s mobile sites.
