The Awesome Shop: Target’s Pinterest-Powered Online Shopping Site Lists Only Top Pinned Items

Target has launched an online catalog with products completely curated from

Pinterest, taking its relationship with the image-focused social media site to a new level in online shopping.

According to a report on InternetRetailer.com, the Target Awesome Shop is a Pinterest-powered site being tested by the retailer, featuring the “best-reviewed” and “most-pinned” items from Target.com.

As of today, the site included 1,229 products total, but Internet Retailer claims products on the site will be refreshed daily.

To access the Awesome Shop, Target has placed a frame at the very top of its Target.com home page that links to the site. The frame’s image includes no mention of Pinterest, simply saying, “Discover the cool stuff everyone’s talking about” along with pin-styled icons:

The Awesome Shop’s link directs users to a separate site at http://awesomeshop.target.com. Products on the site are separated into 15 different categories, including men, women, toys and deals, and even a “Christmas” category.

Clicking on an item in the Awesome Shop displays the item’s rating, total number of reviews, number of Pins, a Pin It link, along with the item’s cost. The “view details” button links to the item’s product page on Target.com.

According to a post from December 6 on Target’s online magazine A Bullseye View, the site is a beta developed by an in-house team in, “a matter of weeks.” Target claims:

Each item featured in the Target Awesome shop is one of the most-pinned Target.com products on Pinterest in the last few days. Best part? Target Awesome Shop only includes products that have at least a 4-star guest review (or no reviews so far) so you’re getting a double stamp of approval.

The Awesome Shop is a step beyond Target’s use of the recently launched Pinterest’s APIs, which offered retailers access to various Pinterest data including Top Pins, Most Recent Pins and Related Pins. Internet Retails says Target is promoting its Awesome Shop on its various social channels, along with its desktop and mobile web sites.
