Studio Launches Competition To Gamify Game That Will Promote Upcoming “Shaun The Sheep”

Once upon a time, movie marketing consisted of posters, billboards and TV commercials. My, how we’ve grown up over the years! Who would have thought an app game could be used to promote a movie release? Well, that’s pretty much standard practice now for certain films.

One such film, Shaun the Sheep (due to be released in February 2015), is getting in on the game promotion action.

Aardman Animations, the creators of the 1995 Oscar-winning short Wallace and Gromit in which Shaun the Sheep made his debut, is out with Sheep Stack, a game that challenges players to achieve 60 levels of sheep stacking in order to reach a plate of donuts. (Yes, that’s what entertainment has come to these days.)

But, we’re not here to debate the finer (or lesser) points of today’s entertainment options.

We’re here to tell you that Aardman has launched a competition for the game-loving community to design additional game levels for a chance to win placement in a future release of the game. One lucky winner will be chosen and invited to work with Shaun the Sheep game developers to bring life to the new level.

Speaking to the, ahem, altruistic thinking behind the promotion, Aardman’s Digital Group Creative Director Dan Efergan said:

Making games is something we’re hugely passionate about, and a creative craft we believe in alongside storytelling and animation. Obviously, we hope people will play the game, but even more so we hope they’ll take part in the competition, as any opportunity to inspire young minds to ‘have a go’ is key to unlocking their own passions. Dan Efergan

Hey, if it gets the kids into the movie theater, it’s all good.
