Report: iOS Has More Traffic, But More “Volatile” Than Android

Ad network Chitika has released data on iOS and Android usage throughout the day. Overall iOS is driving more Web traffic than Android (partly because of the iPad), but traffic coming from iOS devices is more “volatile” than Android traffic. In other words, Android usage is more consistent throughout the day, while iOS has greater peaks and valleys.

iOS vs. Android web traffic

The findings are based on “hundreds of millions of U.S. and Canadian smartphone- and tablet-based online ad impressions seen over the Chitika ad network” in May.

iOS vs Android traffic by daypart

Android and iOS traffic appears to peak at roughly the same time. However, Android traffic is more consistent in the morning and after midnight. It’s not clear why iOS traffic has such a spike and then falls off a cliff. It may have something to do with the iPad, which sees its heaviest usage in the evening and on weekends.

iOS vs. Android daypart traffic patterns

A 2011 study from Flurry analytics (below) showed similar traffic and usage patterns as the Chitika data, but also that combined iOS and Android usage was greater than the PC internet and TV at during the peak periods for each.
