App Annie released a report that presents the most downloaded iPhone and iPad apps and games “of all time.” The company also ranks the apps that have generated the most global revenue to date.
These lists are based on App Annie proprietary data. I’m sure the lists are consistent with other similar data sources, through they may not be entirely definitive.
It’s no surprise that Facebook is the most downloaded app, followed by Facebook Messenger. Facebook has four apps on the list, more than any other company. Apple has two, Google has two — though not the Google Search app. Microsoft has one (Skype), and Twitter has one.
The top revenue apps list looks very different. Revenue here means paid downloads or, in all but one case, a freemium model. Advertising revenue generated via these apps is not factored into the top-revenue calculation. App Annie points out that the top-grossing list showcases a much broader range of apps and companies.
Pandora is the top-grossing app globally. Interestingly, there’s only one app on both lists: Skype.
