Yahoo has apparently lured star tech journalist
David Pogue away from the NY Times. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer posted the news on Tumblr this morning:
I am thrilled to announce that award-winning columnist, best-selling author, and TV host David Pogue will be joining Yahoo. David will lead a major expansion of consumer tech coverage on Yahoo and will publish columns, blog posts and video stories that demystify the gadgets, apps and technology that power our users’ daily lives.Yahoo is in a unique position to bring to life great editorial about the technology consumers are using every day.
While it’s not 100 percent clear from the press materials and the Tumblr post, it appears that Pogue is leaving the NY Times. Either Pogue was given an offer he couldn’t refuse or he was having “issues” with the Times or both.
This is a loss for the Times. Indeed, it would be interesting to know what the offer was from Yahoo.
As Mayer’s post indicates, Pogue’s hiring should be seen in the context of Yahoo’s larger and expanding content strategy. Pogue is a marquee name that will attract attention, prestige and maybe some additional traffic to Yahoo News.
