ComScore
released its July smartphone subscriber market share data for the US. The story is very similar to past months: the market continues to be a contest between Apple and Samsung, iOS and Android.
In the handset category, the iPhone continued to be the top individual smartphone with Samsung gaining 2 points. All other makers were down. The Moto X has just become available and has yet to register. It remains to be seen whether it can reverse Motorola’s long decline.
For its part HTC has just launched an expensive branding campaign featuring actor Robert Downey Jr. It’s unlikely to have a significant impact on handset sales for the embattled Taiwanese company.
Android remained the top smartphone platform. However Apple continued to gain ahead of next week’s announcement of new iPhones.
Windows Phone share was flat, illustrating the continuing challenges ahead for Microsoft’s $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia’s hardware business (and related licensing fees).
The report says US smartphone penetration is 60 percent. Nielsen reports it at 62 percent.
The most interesting part of this month’s data is the new inclusion of top mobile properties and apps. Overall “Google Sites” was the top mobile property followed by Facebook and then Yahoo. These rankings come from a mix of mobile web traffic and apps.
Looking only at mobile apps, Facebook is the top property. That’s followed by five Google apps.
Apple Maps is the 10th ranked app according to comScore. Instagram is number 11. (Compare the list above to the comScore PC top 50 list.) Eventually we’ll probably see a blended list from comScore.
