International telecommunications carrier and internet provider TeliaSonera has launched a long form online video which aims to illustrate the importance of a solid internet backbone and reliable connectivity.
The 5:30 film, Life on Trial, tells the (fictitious) story of Reginald Winters, founder of online gaming company Mendora Group, and how he allowed a “brutal and untimely death to occur.” You see, because Winters used a less than optimal internet service provider for his Jewel of Mendora game, one of the game’s characters, Poanbone The Smashivator, was killed.
Winters is put on trial for the death of Smashivator but, as the defense attorney points out, real life is not the same as online life and Poanbone The Smashivator’s real life counterpart, Alan Fairley, is alive and well in sitting in the courtroom.
The whole thing, hashtagged on social media as #LifeOnTrial, is quite farcical and yet it points out just how important a solid internet connection can be when us offline types go online to immerse ourselves in deep SecondLife-like experiences. To some, those experiences are very, very real and any interruption is, though short of real-life death, a very annoying experience.
The video has garnered 20,000 views in its first day.

Of the importance of online life of offline humans and the dependency we place on rock solid connectivity, TeliaSonera CEO Brendan Ives said:
