Google’s Field Trip, a local discovery app that offers information about your surroundings, is now available for Google Glass. The app was
introduced last year for Android devices and later came to the iPhone, too.
Google’s Timothy Jordan described the app today as “a guide to help you discover hidden gems and interesting information around you as you explore the world with Glass.”
Field Trip has data from more than 100 local publishers in categories like “Historic Places and Events,” “Lifestyle,” and “Food, Drinks and Fun.”
It haven’t had a chance to try it yet (I’m guessing nothing in my house qualifies as significant enough to be listed in Field Trip), but the video explainer (below) that Google shared today makes it look like a natural app for Glass — perhaps more so than handheld devices.
Once installed on Glass, the user can change settings to get more or less notifications via the “MyGlass” control panel.
The iOS and Android versions of Field Trip don’t have ads, but they do have promotional deals from Google Offers. It’s not clear to me if those are part of the Glass app, but Google’s maintaining a strict “no advertising” policy for Glass apps, so my guess is that they’re not. We’ll ask Google for clarification on this and will update the article if we learn more.
Field Trip is a product from Google’s Niantic Labs group, which is led by John Hanke — former chief of Google Local/Maps.
