Google Now Adds Walking & Biking Miles Accrued Over The Month

Google has quietly

added a new feature to Google Now that tracks and reports on the miles you’ve walked and/or biked over the past month.

Google Now users on Android have been noticing the new Google Now cards showing up at the beginning of this month, showing how far they’ve walked or biked in the past month.

Supposedly this feature came out a month ago, but not many noticed. Now we are seeing the social networks light up about the new Google Now cards.

Google calls the cards the activity cards and they say the numbers are “very rough approximation of how far you’ve walked or cycled during that month compared to the previous one.” Should you be worried about your privacy? Well, you can turn off location services.

Here is the help document on this feature:

The Activity summary card appears once a month. It provides a very rough approximation of how far you’ve walked or cycled during that month compared to the previous one. These estimates are based on occasional samples of the accelerometer in your device, which are then compared to typical movements involved in walking or cycling. This information isn’t available unless you’ve turned on Location Reporting and Location History for at least one of your Android devices. If you’ve turned these on for more than one device, the Activity summary card reflects the one you used most often that month.
