Google Launches Media Tools Website For Journalists


Google released a new site this week geared toward media outlets and journalists. The new site offers an extensive set of

Google Media Tools, all neatly assembled into one place.

According to Google, the site is a “Starting point to tap into Google’s suite of digital tools that can enhance news gathering and exposure across television, radio, print and online.”

With overviews, tips, and “Getting Started” links for each tool, the website is arranged into six categories: Gather and Organize, Engage, Visualize, Publish, Develop and Additional Resources.

From the ‘Gather and Organize’ page, users have access to Google Trends, Consumer Surveys and Google Drive. The ‘Engage’ category includes overviews of how journalists can use Google+, Hangouts On Air and YouTube, with links to Google Authorship tools. A number of Google Map resources, along with Google Fusion Tables and Charts are located on the ‘Visualize’ page.

The ‘Publish’ page of the site offers users steps to broaden their reach, with insight on how Google News and Google Image searches work, as well as Google’s  Webmaster Central. There is also a link to more information on how journalist can use Google Analytics and Google’s Custom Search Engine solution.

The Google Media Tools ‘Develop’ page is aimed at developers in journalism, with a number of available tools, including: Google App Engine, Developer Academy, tools for Android developers, Google Web Toolkit, and information on YouTube Partnerships.

Google has assembled an ‘Additional Resources’ page that includes information on Google Politics and Elections, Google Transparency Reports, and Google Crisis Response. The resources are offered to, “Enhance international stories about politics, threats to free expression, natural disasters.”

According to a Google+ post from Googler Daniel Sieberg, the Google Media Tools website was unveiled at the Google+ for Media: ATL Summit.
