Here’s a bit of creative that will appeal to the geeks, gamers and do-it-yourselfers. Working with Saatchi & Saatchi North America’s Team One (a subsidiary of Publicis Groupe) to promote its new multiplayer shooter game Evolve, game publisher 2K and Turtle Rock has launched what it claims is the first-ever downloadable character set in the gaming industry — using 3D printing technology.
T0 promote the characters, Team One created a trailer-like video which features the characters and pointers on how to go about creating the characters.
Those interested can go to the website, choose one or all of the characters in which they are interested, and download the 3D file for printing. If a person already has a 3D printer, they can go right ahead and print. If they don’t have a 3D printer — and here’s where the geek appeal comes in — a link is provided to a Lifehacker article which details how to build an inexpensive 3D printer.
Those with less technical skills or those who simply don’t wish to be bothered can head over to 3D printing sites such as Sculpteo, Shapeways or Thingivers where they can log in, upload the 3D file, have the character printed and receive it in the mail.
Once the characters are printed, people are urged to share their creations on social media using the #4v1 hashtag, which references the game’s structure in that 4 players team to fight one monster.
Here’s how the game designers introduced the promotion to their Facebook audience:
