Founders Of YouTube Take On Vine & Instagram With New Video App

YouTube Founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen are at it again. This time the duo’s company, AVOS, has built a video creation app that allows users to quickly and easily record video. The name of the app is MixBit and it is launching today for iOS.

MixBit-Screen

According to the NYTimes, MixBit has many of the same features as Twitter’s Vine and Facebook’s Instagram. From pressing-to-shoot, to shortened video lengths (MixBit is 16 seconds, Instagram is 15 seconds & Vine is 6 seconds), the concept of MixBit should be familiar.

Where MixBit differs is that both the app and the website MixBit.com will allow users to easily stitch together snippets of video. Users will be able to clip together up to 256 videos to create hourlong video combinations. Users can then share the video on Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus or on the main MixBit site.

In the NY Times interview Hurley said that remixing other people’s videos was the primary goal of the service. He stated:

“The whole purpose of MixBit is to reuse the content within the system .. I really want to focus on great stories that people can tell.”

One item that may hinder the success of the app is that AVOS decided to keep users anonymous — no usernames and no commenting. Hurley did state that the addition of “identity features” could be a possibility down the road, however.

Accounts can be linked to share on Twitter, Facebook and Google+.
