Facebook “Evaluating” Whether To Make Apple Watch App

One of the biggest draws of the new Apple Watch was the constant connectivity to peers, highlighted by social media apps. While Twitter and Instagram Apple Watch apps show great promise, one app is noticeably missing: Facebook.

During the initial press conference in March, Apple CEO Tim Cook showed an example of Facebook and stated that “You can connect to social media”. So, where is this Facebook app that gives users the connection? We reached out to Facebook looking for an update and a Facebook spokesperson gave the following statement:

“We’re excited for the launch of the Apple Watch. We have nothing to announce today, but we’re always evaluating new platforms to build the best Facebook experience for people.”

So Facebook has been prominently displayed during the initial product pitch, created an app for its own Instagram platform — yet is evaluating?

While the Facebook app doesn’t exist users can still get information from the network. Danny Sullivan pointed out in his Apple Watch social app reviews that users can currently get Facebook notifications (along with Google+ and Pinterest) on the Apple Watch. This notification is an exact replica as the example shown by Cook last month.

Maybe there wasn’t ever an app planned – that notifications are enough on their own, though that’s doubtful. All we know for sure is that Facebook is “evaluating” the platform.

We reached out to Pinterest, another social app noticeably missing on Apple Watch,  to see if there was an app in the works. A Pinterest spokesperson confirmed that they are “continuing to work with Apple to create a great experience that uses the new capabilities of the Apple Watch” but have no specific timing for launch at the moment.
