Facebook Driving More Than 2x Twitter Traffic To Parse.ly’s News Clients

Facebook is far and away the top social network driving traffic to some of the biggest online news and media websites, sending them more than twice as much traffic as second-place Twitter.

That’s according to the Authority Report from Parse.ly, a company that counts the likes of Reuters, The Atlantic, Mashable, The Next Web, US News and others among clients using its content optimization platform. Parse.ly says it’s currently processing about five billion page views and 160 million unique readers per month.

For the month of July, Parse.ly reports its clients received about 73.5 million page views from Facebook — making it the top social network referring site. Twitter was second at just under 30 million and Pinterest third at about 10 million.

But Google is king of the hill overall among traffic sources to Parse.ly’s news clients. It was the source of well over 200 million page views in July — tripling Facebook’s total. That Google number includes all Google properties such as Google News, YouTube and, of course, Google.com searches. (For a breakout just of search traffic to these sites, see my article on Search Engine Land, Google Dwarfs Bing & Yahoo As Traffic Source For Major News Sites.)

Not included on the social network referral chart above, but driving more traffic than both LinkedIn and Tumblr, were sites like StumbleUpon and Reddit, both of which drove a little less than Pinterest’s 10 million page views. And right behind those two was Feedly, the clear No. 1 RSS traffic source.
