Did you know that Monday, September 15 will mark the 60th anniversary of one of the most iconic moments in film history? Yes, come Monday, it will be 60 years since Marilyn Monroe did her famous The Seven Year Itch scene during which her skirt blew up as she stood atop a New York City subway vent.
Did you also know that Marilyn Monroe (or at least images of her) is the spokesperson for hair care brand Sexy Hair, makers of Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play Hairspray? No? Don’t feel bad. I had no idea, either.
Yes, the blonde bombshell has been brought back to life thanks to Authentic Brands Group, which licensed the hair company the rights to use Monroe’s name and likeness. Anyway, the brand is making the most of the 60th anniversary on Monday by recreating the iconic scene and letting everyone else get in on the action.
On September 15 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., the brand will unleash an army of modern day Marilyns that will entertain New Yorkers with their own dress-blowing moments on Lexington Avenue between 52nd and 53rd. Then that evening, images recorded from the dress-blowing moments will be projected on the sides of various landmark buildings in the city in and around Times Square, Union Square, Columbus Circle and Grand Central Station.
Everyone else will be able to get in on the action by re-creating and photographing their own “Marilyn Moment” and sharing it to the brand’s Instagram, Facebook or Twitter accounts using the hashtag #MyMarilynMoment.
Now, the brand isn’t looking specifically for an exact replication of the dress-blowing event. As we are told, “Personal stories where a fan turned a potentially embarrassing or career damaging moment into an unforgettable positive will be accepted through September 22, 2014.” Those that do will earn the chance to win a year’s supply of Sexy Hair shampoo, conditioner and stylers.
So, watch out New Yorkers on Lexington Avenue on Monday. There are likely to be a lot of blowing skirts on the block. Find some inspiration and share your own Marilyn Moment.
