Bing News Now Features Trending Topics From Facebook & Twitter

Bing News has gotten a makeover, including the introduction of various trending topics boxes drawn from buzz detected on Facebook and Twitter, as well as Bing’s own searches.

Bing posted about the change, saying:

Bing News now surfaces the latest buzz from Facebook, Twitter and Bing. Cut through the clutter from across the Web with Bing’s real-time view of the most relevant breaking trends and social conversations, available all in one place.

Trending News, In Three Different Ways

Looking at Bing News today, I see the boxes in three places:

Top Stories - Bing News

Trends From Bing

At the top of the page is a “Trending Topic” carousel, which is where Bing is suggesting topics based on searches happening on Bing, Microsoft tells me:

Top Stories - Bing News-1

Select any topic, and you get results back from Bing News:

Trends From Facebook

In the right-hand column, further down the Bing News home page, is a “Trending News On Facebook” section:

Top Stories - Bing News-2

If you select the title at the top of the box, you can see a list of all trending news drawn from Facebook:

Trending News From Twitter

Further down on the Bing News home page, there’s also a “Trending News On Twitter” section:

Top Stories - Bing News-3

Unlike with the Facebook box, you can see the sharing stats. The number of tweets for each news items is shown. Select the title at the top of the box, and as with the Facebook box, you can drill in:

To ensure that only news content from Facebook and Twitter are showing up in Bing News, Bing displays links from Facebook and Twitter only for sites that are also listed in Bing News, Microsoft tells me.

And why not show Facebook sharing stats for the Facebook box? I asked Microsoft, but it didn’t give an answer.
