Apple Wins iPhone5.com Domain Name

Apple Inc. has taken ownership of the iphone5.com domain name thanks to a quick decision by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Apple filed its complaint over the domain name earlier this month, and WIPO’s case details page now indicates that the domain has been “terminated.” The domain, which was previously used as a forum for iPhone-related discussion, now points to an empty page.

The domain owner is currently listed as Corporation Service Company, which The Next Web speculates is a company that Apple used to help acquire the domain.

Apple is expected to launch a new iPhone later this year. Its previous two iPhones have both used the iPhone 4 name, but there’s no guarantee that the next one will be called iPhone 5. When the newest iPad was announced earlier this year, Apple simply named it “the new iPad.”

If you’re curious, iPhone6.com is owned by someone using domain privacy to protect the owner’s identity. But iphone7.com, iphone8.com, iphone9.com and iphone10.com all appear to be owned by non-Apple registrants. Those domain owners might consider today’s news a preview of things to come, if Apple decides to pursue their domains, as well.
