At the iPhone 5 press conference today Apple CEO Tim Cook laid out a lot of stats about the market and device growth in his opening remarks before the new handset was revealed. (See Danny’s hands-on first impressions.)
Because I know you want them, I’ve rounded up the key facts and figures from Cook’s commentary below — with a few bonus data points that weren’t presented today.
The total number of iOS devices (iPhones, iPod Touches, iPads) sold to date is 400 million. This compares with 500 million Android devices that Google says it has sold so far (1.3 million daily Android activations).
iPad
iPads sold April – June 2012: 17 million
iPads sold to date: Approximately 84 million
Web traffic: the iPad is responsible for 91 percent of US tablet-based web traffic (source not mentioned)
Fortune 500 companies testing or deploying: 94 percent
Apps
Total iOS apps: 700,000
iPad-optimized apps: 250,000
Average customer using more than 100 apps
iPhone
The iPhone was introduced in mid-2007. Approximately 245 million iPhones have been sold through Apple’s third fiscal quarter of this year.
There are very bullish predictions of how many iPhone 5 handsets might be sold during its “opening weekend.” The most optimistic estimates see sales of 10 million globally over the Friday to Sunday period after pre-orders begin on September 14.
Below is a chart of Apple iPhone sales (not all iOS devices) by quarter since launch.
