About Half Of The Top Blogs Use WordPress, Research Shows

Blogging is a WordPress-dominated world.

Close to half of the top 100 blogs are using WordPress as their publishing system. That’s according to new research published today by the folks at Royal Pingdom.

Pingdom used the Technorati Top 100 blogs list as its source list and found that 49 of those 100 blogs are running WordPress; 40 are self-hosted, and another nine use WordPress.com. (Our sister site, Search Engine Land, is currently No. 60 on Technorati’s list and is one of the 49 that runs on WordPress.)

The last time Pingdom ran a check on this, they found that 32 of the top 100 blogs were using WordPress — so this year’s number represents a 53 percent gain over three years.

WordPress itself also shares some stunning stats that are mostly about WordPress.com (and don’t included self-hosted sites):

  1. There are about 72.8 million WordPress sites right now, and “about half” are hosted by WordPress.

  2. WordPress.com users publish about 500,000 posts per day.

  3. About 400,000 comments per day are posted on WordPress.com-hosted blogs.

  4. WordPress.com gets about 2.5 billion page views per month.

Pingdom says the big loser over the past three years is TypePad, which dropped from powering 16 of the top 100 blogs to just two this year.
