Yes, Twitter Is Down For Some, Having Site & API Issues

Can’t log into Twitter? Can’t access profile pages or load particular tweets. Finding Twitter just unstable? Your Twitter client not working? It’s not you. It’s Twitter.

I’ve been having problems with Twitter for about 20 minutes now, all of which I’ve described above. Now, Twitter’s officially posted that it is indeed having issues, saying:

Some users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.

Currently, I’m finding that sometimes I can access the site, sometimes I can’t.

Beyond that, Twitter is clearly having API issues, issues with its mechanism for allowing apps to pull data from Twitter. Both my Twitter clients — Twhirl and Twitter For Mac — have stopped updating. I’ve also had reports that HootSuite can’t access Twitter.

Twitter has a separate area for API status. There it currently notes “service disruption” for a variety of things the API gives access to, such as home timeline tweets.

Logging out of the site or my apps doesn’t help. In fact, after I logged out of the Twitter site, it took ages before I could log back in.

Postscript: Twitter seems to be back to normal. However, one other thing has cropped up. Links tweeted during the disruption were not turned into clickable links, as best I can tell.

My guess is that Twitter’s “wrapper” program that puts a redirect around all links somehow broke as part of today’s havoc, causing any links to be turned into ordinary text.
