Video Vote-a-Thon: PopShorts Allows Users To Rate & Discover Instagram & Vine Videos

With the fragmentation of the video market, it’s become harder to keep tabs on what network people/brands are leveraging. PopShorts is launching today for the purpose of bringing together popular Vine and Instagram videos into one location According to PopShorts themselves this service is essentially “a ‘Hot or Not’ for Vine and Instagram videos.”

Users will be able to submit their videos by submitting the full URL of either a Vine or Instagram video. Much like traditional social aggregation sites, the community will then be able to vote on the best videos. PopShorts users can downvote (bust), skip, or upvote (pop) each video, and if a video receives enough positive votes it will head to the “Poppin” section. The algorithm is self-described as “similar to the Reddit algorithm to rank posts and make sure the site doesn’t get stale.”

During launch, PopShorts will have plenty of help in spreading the word. To promote the new site, PopShorts has 20 of the most followed Viners and Instagramers to help lead the community and promote videos. Names include MAX JR (1 million vine followers), Jerry Purpdrank (850k+ vine followers) and more.

There currently are no major websites that allow for new “short video” discovery, so this could be a boon for brands, as a “paid discovery” similar to StumbleUpon could be implemented to help with the seeding of brand videos. Founder Adam Gausepohl* stated the following about how brands and advertisers can effectively use the service:

“For advertisers, PopShorts is working on ways to seed videos organically on the platform, and will also help connect them to the top Vine and Instagram talent. For brands without much of a budget, they can still make excellent content and submit it on PopShorts to see if the community will make it go viral.”

The site was officially launched today, and an iOS app will be coming in September. For more information, head on over to PopShorts.
