Understanding the Block Structure: How to Insert, Edit, and Delete Blocks

The WordPress 5.0 update brought many great additions to the platform which included the block menu. Users have the option to customize and create content by selecting blocks for titles, text, dividers, headers, and video to build a page or post. Creating content for your site begins with first learning how to insert, edit, and delete blocks as you build your post or page.

There are currently multiple ways to insert blocks throughout posts and pages. This is essential for content that requires a combination of sources like media or images.

Here are the three steps for inserting a block into a page or post.

1.) At the top left of the page, you’ll notice a toolbar with a (+) icon. If you click this icon, it will allow you to search for blocks and insert them.

2.) In the editor field, you will also see a block inserter option, also with a (+) icon when you click above, in-between, or below blocks that you already have in the editor.

3.) You’ll also have the option to “Add Block,” at the top of the page when a user has added an image at the end of the page and doesn’t get the ability to hit enter to create a new empty block with the associated add button.

Pro Tip: A shorthand trick for adding a new block is to type “/ +” the block name that you want to insert. This is known as the slash inserter and is great for users who only like using the keyboard.

Editing and Deleting Blocks

On the top left of the page, next to the block inserter, you have the ability to undo and redo actions on your page or post.

Next to the icons is the option to click info (i). This will show you valuable information about your page—including word count and a post outline.

Block Outline

The block outline is a helpful option for navigating documents with many blocks so you don’t have to scroll endlessly. Users with clients will find block management easier because lots of code runs as blocks and can provide a better experience by scrolling in-and-out of the viewport.

The block outline option is next to the (i).

You will see an icon made up of three lines that look like a bulleted list. Click on that icon to see the blocks that make up your post or page. By clicking on a given block, you’ll be led to that block within the editor field.
