What television shows resonated most with Twitter fans this season? The usual tentpole suspects, according to data released today by Nielsen Social. The Super Bowl, Grammys and Oscars dominated the Twitter TV landscape once again with fans of those major events flooding Twitter feeds with commentary.
Not surprisingly, the Super Bowl, the overall television ratings leader, was again the biggest TV event on Twitter with 16.1 million people seeing tweets about the game, halftime show and ads. The 16.1 million audience number beat the 15.3 million total of 2014 despite the fact that there were about 200,000 fewer tweets about this year’s game. The 25.1 million tweets sent about the 2015 Super Bowl and the 243,000 tweets per minute at 8:19 p.m. also were Nielsen’s highest totals of the season.
Without Ellen’s selfie, the Oscars fell behind the Grammmys as the biggest special event in the Nielsen Twitter ratings. Tweets about the Grammys reached 13.3 million people, edging the 13.0 million reached by tweets about the Oscars. Without Ellen’s viral shot from 2014, the number of tweets about the Oscars fell by 47% to only 5.9 million while the Grammys generated 13.4 million tweets, only slightly down from the 13.8 million (aided by Pharrell’s hat) in 2014.
AMC’s the Walking Dead was the top series overall with a 4.3 million average weekly audience, but Fox’s Empire set a record for single-night engagement. Empire generated 2.4 million tweets during its two-part finale in March, setting the record for the most tweeted series episode since Nielsen started tracking activity in 2011.
