The WordPress Editor: Everything You Need to Know About Blocks

The editor focuses on your content—which is your websites most valuable asset. The editor allows for developers or agencies to create interactive and custom templates that everyday users can easily update without the fear of breaking their site. Users will experience an easier way to create dynamic, rich content in posts and pages with its system of visually based content blocks.

The block structure promises to make content creation easier and more intuitive for users of all skill levels. Advanced users and developers will also have the ability to create custom blocks or add specially developed custom blocks for their own unique needs. The default blocks include a variety of options to help create and publish your content to your WordPress site.

Current default blocks included with the editor:

  1. Audio

  2. Button

  3. Categories

  4. Code

  5. Columns

  6. Cover Image

  7. Embeds

  8. File

The block library also includes premade blocks that help you manage specialized content such as embedded videos, content for sharing, and galleries. It’s also possible to add custom blocks to add features specific to your site’s unique needs. People with development experience can create their own custom blocks, but any user can access the expanding library of custom blocks that are being produced by members of the WordPress community. And, much like plugins and themes, custom blocks may be purchased from third-party developers, taking advantage of a new and growing market for new WordPress assets.

Full-Width Blocks:

Even blocks that are included in the default blocks library, such as the image block, can be customized. You can choose to show an image in a wide or full-width format assuming your chosen theme will allow it.

Blocks can fill many functions previously provided only by added plugins, such as creating galleries or slideshows, and they can work with any theme. There’s no limit to the number of blocks that can be added to a post or a page, and blocks can be moved, copied, or edited at any time.
