Survey: 53 Pct. Like New iPhone, 33 Pct. Want The Apple Watch

New iPhones

Following the Apple announcements yesterday Toluna QuickSurveys conducted an online poll of 1,000 Americans about their reactions to the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch. The survey showed a positive reaction to the new iPhones but less enthusiasm for the Apple smartwatch.

Overall 53 percent of survey respondents said they liked the new phone’s design, but 27 percent gave it a thumbs down and 20 percent weren’t sure or had no opinion. The two favorite iPhone features were faster WiFi and the phabletty screen size of the iPhone 6 Plus.

Notwithstanding this second finding, the 4.7-inch iPhone was preferred to the 6 Plus, 63 percent to 37 percent. A third of respondents indicated a willingness to stand in line to get one.

According to the findings, 68 percent of current iPhone owners said they would get an iPhone 6. By comparison, 53 percent of Android owners said they would definitely not switch to the device. Eighty percent of this 53 percent Android group said their next phones would again be Android handsets.

People were less excited about Apple’s watch, which could be in part because it’s unfamiliar and part of a new product category. As the graphic below indicates, 33 percent said they may buy the device compared with nearly 70 percent who said they either would not or probably not. There were undecideds as well (14 percent).

The ability to see and touch the watch may sway people one way or another.

Reaction to Apple Watch

Only 9 percent of respondents reported currently owning a smartwatch. And 70 percent of these individuals had either a Samsung (the majority) or an LG. Though the survey doesn’t do this it would be interesting to slice these watch results by current smartphone ownership.

The three favorite things about the watch, in order, were: 1) its size 2) its health-related features and 3) the various model and customization options.

This survey could be predictive of actual sales; however it’s better to see it simply as the immediate reaction to news reports about the announcements. (It’s not clear whether or how many of these people saw the live stream of the keynote; probably few if any.) When people have a chance to reflect and see the devices up close their opinions may change.

The iPhone 6 will be available for pre-order this Friday. By early next week we should have another strong indicator of whether the iPhone 6 will be a big hit or not the form of actual pre-orders.
