New monthly smartphone market share figures are out from comScore. The firm says that in the US smartphone penetration has now reached 73 percent.

Apple remains the top individual manufacturer, with roughly 42 percent of the market followed by Samsung with 29 percent. Android’s operating system share grew almost a point to 52.3 vs. last quarter. Despite the big success of the iPhone 6 Apple’s share, according to comScore, fell half a point to just under 42 percent.

Microsoft was flat, while BlackBerry continues its long slide into obscurity.

Kantar Worldpanel ComTech numbers for the US market appear to be generally in agreement with those from comScore, with Android taking just under 54 percent of the market to Apple’s 41.5 percent. However Kantar data show that across the major EU markets (especially the UK) the iPhone 6 has made inroads against Android, growing share almost six points.

Most of comScore’s Top 15 apps list remains unchanged from last month with one exception. The Yahoo Weather Widget, which was dropped from iOS 8, fell out of the top 15 and has been replaced by Amazon’s mobile app.

That represents the first time that the e-commerce site has been in the top 15 since comScore started reporting these data in July 2013.
