Thank you for joining us for “SEO Made Simple: Get Found Online and Grow Your Business or Brand,” where we reviewed all the intricacies of optimizing your site with SEO tools and tactics. Search Engine Optimization is crucial for attracting new readers, visitors, and customers to your site which can help build traffic and conversions to your site. WordPress features several functions that can help you implement SEO tactics on your site like plugins, tags, and categories.
We were joined by our SEO Manager Samuel Page who discussed all the tips and tricks for using SEO on your website through keywords, linking strategies, and online tools. He walked attendees through the various WordPress settings within the admin dashboard that enhance searchability and boost search engine rankings. During the webinar, he also covered the various WordPress plugins that can be installed to assist beginning and advanced users with SEO on their website.
In case you were unable to catch the webinar live, we compiled some of the most popular questions attendees asked during the duration of the webinar. If you have any additional questions, please let us know in the comments below.
What is cornerstone content?
Cornerstone content can also be known as “evergreen content,” and reflects the best and most important articles on your website. They can be a blog post or a page that you want to rank highest in search engines. Plugins like Yoast SEO can help you optimize your cornerstone content with internal linking suggestions and content analysis.
What is anchored text?
Anchor text is a visible, clickable text of a link. It can appear in a different color than the surrounding text in a piece of content.
What is a good tool to check the status of your SEO on your website?
WordPress features amazing SEO plugins that can help assist in your SEO efforts. Yoast SEO, W3 Total Cache, and All in One SEO are all great plugins to research and review on the WordPress.Org directory.
Can we use multiple SEO plugins?
We don’t recommend using multiple SEO plugins at one time. WordPress plugins all have specified uses for your website and multiple plugins with the same functionality will not perform as needed for your site.
How can we measure the success of our SEO efforts?
The great thing about SEO is that there are several metrics to measure your progression. You can focus on incoming organic traffic, improved rankings in search engines, and improved user metrics (time on site, conversion rate, click-through rates, etc.)
How do you determine your categories and their hierarchy? How many should you have?
Determining your category hierarchy can be based on a combination of search volume, topics under that category, and what is logical to the user. The number of categories will depend on your topic/niche. There isn’t a strict rule to categories, so we recommend organizing as you see best.
How do you adjust your visibility settings in your admin dashboard so search engines can view your website?
You’ll start at your WordPress admin, select Settings> Reading. You’ll then select the Search Engine Visibility option and select the checkbox. This will now allow search engines to crawl your site.
How do you input ALT text?
ALT text is input for each individual image you add to your media library. If an image does not load on a user’s screen, ALT text can help search engines understand what an image is about.
What is the difference between internal and external links?
Internal links direct website visitors to other pieces of relevant content or pages on your site. External links are links on other websites that lead to your site content.
Are there any optimum number of keywords per page and per site in your opinion?
No, there isn’t an optimal number of keywords. Keyword density was something people did to game search engines in the early days. Search engines caught on and have become much better at understanding content. We always recommend that your content is authentic and captures the voice of your brand/business, don’t just fill it with keywords.
What is the best way to find the right keywords for your market
There are 3 great ways to do this.
1) Use a keyword research tool to see the search volume and the competition level out there.
2) Look at your top-ranking competitors and see what they have in their title tag.
3) Test keywords in Google Adwords to see which ones perform best.
Are keywords more important in the title or the content?
It’s important to have keywords in the title and integrating them naturally within your content.
If you change your current URL to optimize keywords, will that hurt your SEO?
There isn’t a rule for changing your current URL as it will change based on your topic/niche. We suggest creating the content and keeping in mind the search terms rather than creating the content based on search terms.
You want to make a natural site that users love and be cognizant of keywords otherwise you’ll create a site that’s good for search engines and bad for visitors (the latter will eventually lead to failure as search engines improve.)
