There’s no shortage of measures that show Facebook’s dominance of the social media landscape, but here’s another significant one. More than eight of every 10 shares from publishers’ websites are on Facebook, according to a report released this week by ShareThis.
Total eclipse of the market? Not quite, but the shadow is getting longer.
Facebook’s share of sharing is 84.3%, jumping a healthy 11.9 percentage points since last year at this time. That doesn’t leave much room for other players. Twitter eked out a 5.8% share of sharing activity, falling 3 percentage points since last year. Only Blogger, which rose 2.1 percentage points to 4.8%, showed a gain in the data from ShareThis, which pulls its results from the 2 million websites that have installed its social sharing tools. Pinterest fell 5.3 percentage points to 2.9%.
Facebook’s strength was especially solid on mobile devices, where it claimed 87% of total sharing, compared to 79% on the desktop. The social network also was strong in ShareThis’ People & Society, Health and News categories. Pinterest showed strength in several niches, Food & Drink, Home & Garden, Beauty & Fitness and Shopping. Twitter was by far strongest in the Sports category.
