How things have changed. Chrome is the world’s top browser, and Safari is number two. That’s according to Shareaholic’s most recent
browser share report. The company says the data are collected from a base of more than 250 million users and over 200,000 publishers.
While Chrome is the undisputed browser leader (35 percent), Shareaholic says that mobile growth has helped propel Safari to the number two position. Safari’s combined mobile and desktop share is now 26 percent, says Shareaholic.
The company reports that Internet Explorer and Firefox have both lost ground. The two now combine for roughly 25 percent of the market.
However, the data above are contradicted by StatCounter, which agrees that Chrome is the top browser globally, but that’s where it ends. It shows the following global browser share breakdown:
Chrome: 39 percent
IE: 16 percent
Firefox: 14 percent
Safari: 8 percent + (iPhone 5 percent)
Android: 7 percent
Opera: 4 percent
Others: 7 percent
Regardless of what the “real” numbers are, it’s clear that IE has been hurt by Microsoft’s mobile weakness. The same goes for Firefox, which has been even more of a bystander in mobile. The company’s Firefox mobile OS is a kind of “late-innings” bid for relevance in mobile.
Looking at just the mobile market StatCounter reports the following breakdown globally:
Android: 24 percent
iPhone: 17 percent
Chrome: 15 percent
Safari: 13 percent
Opera: 10 percent
Others: 21 percent
