Promoted Pins, the first true ad product on Pinterest, started rolling out today. The company announced it had begun testing Promoted Pins three weeks ago.
The ads are distinguished from organic pins by a subtle “Promoted Pin” tag and information icon, as shown in the screenshot below.
Promoted Pins can be seen on both the web and Pinterest’s mobile apps in search results and category feeds. Ads are served based on contextual relevancy. For example, a search for “Camping” could produce the Promoted Pin for a camping lantern shown above.
For now, the company is wading cautiously into advertising and rolling out Promoted Pins with a select number of businesses. Pinterest is soliciting user feedback and will also be monitoring advertiser success closely before proceeding with a broader roll-out.
