Periscope starts testing a way to #save live broadcasts

One of Periscope’s most requested features is now available to all users with the simple addition of a hashtag in the title of any live broadcast.

CEO and co-founder Kayvon Beykpour explained in a live broadcast late Wednesday that users who want to save their videos can do so by simply including #save in the title of their live broadcast. The hashtag can appear anywhere in the title and can even be the only word in the title, but it has to be exactly #save; using things like #save123 or #saveme won’t work.

There’s no limit to how many live broadcasts can be saved this way, and saving works for both public and private broadcasts. Saved videos will include comments and hearts from viewers. They’ll show up on the user’s profile and will stay visible everywhere the live broadcast was visible — e.g., in tweets if the live stream was publicized on Twitter, in the home feed and so forth.

Beykpour says this test of the #save hashtag is temporary and will probably stop working when Periscope launches new tools for users to manage their broadcasts from inside the Periscope app.

“We are actively building support for controlling how your broadcasts stay on Periscope, and that includes keeping your broadcast forever. It also includes capabilities for some people who want their broadcasts to be deleted more quickly. We’re working on a holistic solution for that that we’re really excited about, and that’s going to be coming in the near future.”

Periscope’s #save beta test works now on both the iOS and Android apps.

It comes at the right time for live broadcasters: The popular Katch service, which was the only way to save Periscope live broadcasts, just shut down on Wednesday after being unable to raise the money it needed to stay in business.
