More Than Just Mobile: Instagram Launches New Web Profiles

Over the past year Instagram has been slowly been transforming into more than just an app with the addition of web images and mobile photo pages. Today the most notable change has been announced, profile pages for web-based users. Instagramers will now be able to replicate the mobile viewing experience (view photos, like & comment on photos, explore other pictures) on the web.

Not surprisingly the web version of the popular social site features a bold, image-heavy design. A header image that resembles Facebook timeline sits atop the user profile and pulls in various Instagram photos. Any user account can be found by simply appending the username after the URL (example: instagram.com/nike).

Users have the ability to explore other Instagram users, photos and like/comment as well. If an account is set to private, only those approved to follow will be able to see photos. While users will have the ability to replicate the Instagram viewing experience, photos will not be able to be uploaded via the web. Instragram stated that:

“Instagram is focused on the production of photos from mobile devices so users are not currently able to upload from the web. We’re excited about how Web Profiles will make it easier to browse and share content on the web for all our users.”

Profiles will be rolling out to all users this week. For more information see the Instagram blog.
