Marketing Day: November 2, 2012

Here’s our daily recap of what happened in online marketing today, as reported on Marketing Land and other places across the web.

From Marketing Land:

The week in marketing seemed quiet (perhaps because of Sandy and the impending election) but was actually full of big news and trends. In the big news bucket was an unassuming post that Yahoo! would ignore the IE10 Do Not Track signal and data that indicates that privacy and cookie concerns are overblown. In the […]

It’s getting very boring to write about the US smartphone market, which is a two horse race. Notwithstanding all the investment, splash and marketing surrounding Windows Phones US consumers aren’t buying it/them. And RIM has effectively “gone dark.” Metrics firm comScore reported that in September Android grew its dominant market share to 52.5 percent. Powered […]

Nexus smartphones are not unlike concept cars at an auto show. They’re ogled and admired but rarely owned. Typically cutting edge in design and software integration, they’re models intended to showcase the “next generation” experience rather than necessarily become mainstream bestsellers. So it has been with nearly every Nexus handset to date. The new Nexus […]

As the biggest shopping weekend of the year approaches, advertisers and publishers are gearing up for the Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping bonanza. While affiliate marketing strategies should be firmly in place by now, there’s still time to tweak your content and promotions to make the most of the upcoming shopping season, which promises to be […]

I’ve been testing Google’s new Nexus 10 tablet for the past few days, and there’s plenty to love. It’s fast, has a great screen and nice sound. There are plenty of the key apps I like. It offers content galore through Google Play. But at the same price as the basic iPad and only $100 […]

The hottest issue over the past few months has been the dwindling reach that Facebook pages have seen. A new feature, Page Notifications, is in the process of being rolled out that will allow for users to see all posts from any given page. This will work much like the “Close Friends” functionality for accounts. […]

Earlier this week The Daily uncovered information that Facebook was experimenting with a proprietary classifieds system called “Marketplace” that focused more on a peer-to-peer exchange. Not only would users be able to list items, but also leverage Facebook audience tools like promoted posts or ads to help get items sold. The Daily reports that the […]

We know that Instagram is one of the most popular social destinations for users, but brands are following suit. Back in August, Simply Measured, a social analytics firm, discovered that 40% of brands had adopted Instagram for marketing. Since then, brand adoption has jumped a whopping 35% quarter-vs-quarter increase — up to 54% adoption rate as of November 1st. Instagram crushed all […]

Yelp formally reported Q3 earnings this afternoon. Last week the company announced preliminary third quarter results along with the acquisition of one of its largest European rivals, Qype, for $50 million. Yelp said it earned quarterly net revenue of $36.4 million, which was 63 percent greater than the previous Q3 in 2011. Net revenue for […]

LinkedIn sailed past Wall Street estimates with its just-announced Q3 earnings. The company is reporting $252 million in revenue for the quarter, an 81 percent jump from Q3 of 2011. Net income was $2.3 million, compared to a loss of $1.6 million a year ago. And the company’s earnings-per-share was 22 cents, double the 11 […]

Today during its Q3 earnings call earlier today Marchex announced that it would be separating its calls and its domains business into two publicly traded companies: Marchex announced earlier today that its board of directors has authorized management to pursue the separation of its business into two distinct, publicly traded entities. Upon closing of the […]
