Facebook, Twitter and Instagram offered a broad look at this year’s trending stories, places and events.
According to Facebook, Pope Francis was the most talked about topic around the world, while Glee star Lea Michele’s public acknowledgment of her costar Corey Monteith’s death was awarded the Golden Tweet of 2013 for most retweeted tweet of the year.
Instagram proved New York is the city that never sleeps, winning the No. 1 spot for most Instagrammed city of the year.

Top Life Events – More people added a relationship, got engaged or got married.
Top Check-Ins Around the World – Disneyland was the big winner here, with Disney parks in France, China, Japan, and the US winning the top check-in locations for those countries.
Most Talked about Topics in the US – Superbowl led this list, followed by Government Shutdown, Boston Marathon, Syria Crisis and Harlem Shake.
Twitter 2013 Year in Review
The most trending conversation on Twitter was Glee star Lea Michele’s public acknowledgment of her costar Corey Monteith’s death. Awarded the Golden Tweet of 2013, Twitter claims Michele’s tweet was retweeted more than 408,000 times.

A recent tweet by Paul Walker’s staff announcing the actor’s tragic death was the second most retweeted tweet of the year, with more than 400,000 retweets.
It wasn’t all sad news on Twitter. Niall Horan from boy band One Direction won the third Golden Tweet of 2013 when he announced it was his 20th birthday. The site also noted that the Boston Police Department used Twitter, “To spread the word about the manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombers,” while world leaders used the site to share their reactions to the nuclear agreement brokered between the US and Iran.

Instagram 2013 Year in Review
On Instagram, New York City was the most Instagrammed city of 2013, followed by Bangkok, Thailand and Los Angeles.
Three of the top ten most photographed locations of 2013 were all located in New York City with Times Square, Central Park and The High Line each making the list.
