Google Glass App Store Coming In 2014

Google Glass users and developers will have to wait until next year for Google to launch a dedicated app store for the device.

A Google spokesperson confirmed that plan for us today, after it was reported over the weekend in a lengthy first-person Glass user essay in the New York Times.

Earlier this summer, there were signs of Glass being supported in the Google Play store, but nothing more has happened since then. In the Times’ article, author Clive Thompson writes:

The company says an app store is coming next year, when Glass is available to the general public.

Google confirmed those plans with us today, but the company declined to share any additional details like if the Glass app store would be part of Google Play or separate, and if developers will be able to charge for apps by the time the store opens. (The Glass API terms of service currently demands that developers offer apps for free, a policy that can’t last forever.)

About 10 days ago, Google’s Timothy Jordan noted on Google+ that the company is working on a process for developers to submit their apps to Google “to get quota and be listed” — presumably in some kind of app store or directory. Jordan wrote that more details should be available soon.

Until there’s an official app source from Google, Glass owners have several unofficial Glass app directories that they can use to find the latest apps.
