Note: Facebook and Instagram are down tonight, Jan. 27, 2015, with both web and mobile app users unable to access the networks. Here’s our current story about the outage.

Note: Some Facebook users are experiencing this issue again today, June 6. Read the latest on the current outage here. Note 2: Once again, some Facebook users seem to be experiencing this issue on November 3, 2014.

Facebook was inaccessible for some users this afternoon starting at about 3:10 p.m. Eastern when they saw an error message that said:

“Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes.” The outage also hit Facebook’s developers site — developers.facebook.com — where the message was a bit more apologetic:

Postscript (4:45 p.m. Eastern): The outage doesn’t appear to be universal. I received reports from many people that they haven’t had a problem accessing the social site. And the DownforEveryoneOrJustMe site reports that Facebook.com is up. I’ve adjusted the headline and story to indicate that it’s not an outage for all, but it’s definitely not just me:

Facebook is down. Totally missing out on what everyone ate for lunch :-( — PaulCantor (@PaulCantor) May 29, 2014

I’ve reached out to Facebook for an explanation and will report if I get a reply.

Postscript II (6 p.m. Eastern): From a Facebook spokesperson: A very small number of people had trouble accessing their accounts for a short period of time earlier today. Service has been restored.
