Historically users chosen a selected email that displays on their profile pages. However, Facebook has recently swept through forcing all displayed email addresses to the @facebook.com option. The new Facebook messages and email system was launched late 2010, but usage never quite took off.
One of the biggest complaints with the change is that it truly changes the way messages are delivered to the user. The Facebook email addresses send email content directly to the Facebook Message inbox, something that looks nearly identical to traditional Facebook messages.
Messages that arrive directly from email will show an envelope next to the timestamp. Standard messages from Facebook do not have an icon appear with the date and messages sent from chat will feature a voice bubble icon. By hovering over each, one can find the message source:
The email address can be changed back by going to :
Your Timeline > About > Contact Info > Edit > Emails
Users can then add additional email addresses as well as select which email addresses will be displayed.
Facebook told Ars Technica that the chagnes were based on privacy issues and stated the following:
As we announced back in April, we’ve been updating addresses on Facebook to make them consistent across our site. In addition to everyone receiving an address, we’re also rolling out a new setting that gives people the choice to decide which addresses they want to show on their timelines. Ever since the launch of timeline, people have had the ability to control what posts they want to show or hide on their own timelines, and today we’re extending that to other information they post, starting with the Facebook address.
