We had a great time with our attendees who joined the Demystifying WordPress Security: Simple Steps to Secure Your Site webinar. Security is an essential aspect of maintaining a website whether you use an SSL certificate or install security plugins. Core Developer Jonathan Desrosiers taught attendees how to back up their website which assists if it becomes compromised with malicious code or viruses.
During our live question and answer segment, attendees asked how to manage user roles on their site and create secure passwords to thwart hackers. They were also instructed on how to check their site health in their admin dashboard and check for the latest PHP updates. We were excited that attendees were eager to learn how to protect their WordPress site with fantastic security choices.
In case you were unable to catch the webinar live, we compiled some of the most popular questions attendees asked during the duration of the webinar. If you have any additional questions, please let us know in the comments below!
Q: How do I activate my free SSL from Bluehost? Follow the steps here. Give our support team a call if you have any questions.
Q: Should you update your WordPress install? Yes, hackers often times will target websites running older versions of WordPress.
Q: How would someone be added to your site as an admin without your knowledge? They should not be. Be sure your developer or another admin has not added them.
Q: How do you update your PHP? If you give our call support at 888-401-4678 and we can help you with that! Q: Should I use multiple security plugins at the same time? No, this is not suggested as it could cause conflicts causing neither to work. Q: I deleted my unused themes, but now SiteHealth is telling me that I need to assign a default theme in case the existing theme goes down? So WordPress has several default themes (Twenty Nineteen, Twenty Seventeen, etc.). When a problem is detected in a theme, WordPress will always try to fallback to a default theme. This sounds like a confusing recommendation though. I am going to do some testing and see if we can make some improvements to this. Q: Why is my site showing as “not secure” when a user goes onto it? Sounds like there is an issue with your SSL certificate. Please reach out to Bluehost support so someone can help you troubleshoot. Q: How do I know if I am running the latest version of WordPress? You can see this in your admin dashboard. We are also happy to help if you’d like us to look into it for you.
