Delicious Offers Sneak Peek At Upcoming Redesign

Having already made some

incremental updates to the service, Delicious is prepping a more substantial redesign and is now offering a preview of what’s to come.

The sneak peek is available at demo.delicious.com, but Delicious warns that it’s a work-in-progress and doesn’t have all of the existing site’s features.

Here’s a screenshot of the home page:

There’s always the temptation to try comparing something new to something familiar and, if I had to do that now, I’d say it looks like a cross between (a very early) Digg and Google’s search results page (before the recent switch that removed navigation out of the left column).

In the new home page design, each “popular right now” link can be previewed in the right column, and that’s also where Delicious shows how many times a link has been bookmarked, its tags, and buttons to add/share the URL. It’s reminiscent of Google’s preview pane that offers a screenshot and other data to the right of each search result.

The Delicious blog post explains that the site’s codebase is being rewritten to improve site speed. It also says that an iOS app is already in development and an Android app is planned, too.

Delicious has historically been a valuable service for marketers as a way to discover different types of popular content, generate ideas for blog articles and other content brainstorming. There was serious concern about two years ago that Yahoo was about to shut it down, but Yahoo instead sold it to AVOS, a company led by the founders of YouTube, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen.
